MARBELLA’S OLD TOWN

Marbella’s Old Town, also known as Casco Antiguo, is a captivating labyrinth of narrow streets, whitewashed buildings, and picturesque squares nestled within the heart of the city. Its history dates back to the Roman era when Marbella was known as Salduba, serving as a trading post and agricultural center.

During the Moorish period, the town flourished as a fortified settlement known as Marbil-la, featuring defensive walls, towers, and gates that protected it from invasions. Many of the narrow streets and alleys that wind through the Old Town today still bear traces of its Moorish heritage, with charming architectural details and hidden courtyards waiting to be discovered.

In the 15th century, Marbella was reconquered by the Catholic Monarchs, leading to the construction of Christian churches and the expansion of the town. The Old Town’s layout reflects this blend of Moorish and Spanish influences, with historic landmarks such as the Church of the Encarnación and the Ermita de Santiago adding to its cultural significance.
